Book Review: Friday Night Lights by H.G. Bissinger

“Keep Those Feet Moving”

”Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can’t Lose”

Friday Night Lights details the true story of the 1988 Permian Panthers High School Football Team. The team built on the motto of MOJO was the heart and soul of Odessa, Texas. The story of the 1988 Permian Panthers details one of inspiration, sacrifice, and coming of age. Permian’s heated rivalry with Midland Lee High School symbolizes the excitement that sports rivalries can be for the players, coaches, and fans. The Permian Panthers’ dominance throughout the 1988 season got them all the way to state.

At the end of the book, there is an epilogue that gives a where-are-they-now of players on that 1988 Permian Football team. Players included in the epilogue were Mike Winchell, Boobie Miles, and Ivory Christian. They recapped their experiences under those Friday Night Lights 25 years later.

This book can connect to anyone who has played under those Friday night lights. Personally, it touched me because I have played high school football and know what it’s like at practices, games, and other team events. The book took me back to those fond memories of my own. Friday Night Lights shows how high school football is an epitome of American culture and how it brings towns together. The importance of high school football in Texas was emphasized throughout the book.

JP Sports Rating

I rate this book a solid 10/10. It was relatable, inspiring, and a great true story. I would say that this book is the best book I have read so far. I would highly recommend Friday Night Lights to everyone.
