It's almost that time of the year! A time for playing around with mock drafts, trying to decide who your keeper will be, and gearing up to either take home your league's championship trophy, make or miss the playoffs, or suffer the consequences of a dreaded sacko punishment.
Ah yes, fantasy football season is nearly upon us.
Some people may be studying before their drafts while others may just be diving right in with the knowledge that they already have. Either way, you never know how your season will go. Fantasy Football is a culture within itself. If you are in a league, chances are you have already started looking at who you want to draft with your first pick. In this article, we will provide our top 5 list of players that you should consider in hopes that it will make your decision easier.
5. Christian McCaffrey, RB, CAR
Last season, Christian McCaffrey had another banged up year only playing in 7 games all season. He sat out beginning at the end of November with an ankle injury. During those 7 games, McCaffrey obtained 442 rushing yards, 1 rushing TD, 343 receiving yards, and 1 receiving TD. It is worth noting that McCaffrey has struggled to stay healthy in the last 2 seasons, only playing a total of 10 games within that timeframe.
From a fantasy football standpoint, McCaffrey is dangerous when he is healthy. In those 7 games he played last season, he scored a total of 90.5 fantasy points. In his last full season in 2019, McCaffrey scored a total of 355.2 fantasy points.
With all the information given above, it is safe to say that Christian McCaffrey is a high-risk/high-reward type player.
4. Deebo Samuel, WR, SF
Deebo Samuel was a dual threat for the 49ers last season, playing wide receiver and running back. On the receiving side, Samuel accumulated 1,405 receiving yards, 6 receiving TDs, and 77 receptions. On the rushing side, he accumulated 365 rushing yards and 8 rushing TDs.
Samuel was an absolute weapon for fantasy owners last year, scoring the third most fantasy points for a wide receiver behind Cooper Kupp and Davante Adams. However, where he will begin the 2022 NFL Season is still in question with Deebo demanding a trade from the 49ers.
3. Cooper Kupp, WR, LAR
Cooper Kupp is coming off of one of the greatest seasons ever for a wide receiver. During the 2021 NFL Season, he accumulated 1,947 receiving yards, 145 receptions, and 16 touchdowns. Kupp led the NFL in all three of those categories and became the first player since Steve Smith Sr. to win the Triple Crown. Kupp's 1,947 receiving yards were also second in a single season to Calvin Johnson's 1,964 in 2012. His 145 receptions this past season were second in a single season to Michael Thomas' 149 in 2019.
Cooper Kupp was the highest scoring wide receiver and the overall highest scorer in fantasy football last season with 439.5 total fantasy points. He remains as the Rams' WR1 and the overall WR1 for fantasy football going into the 2022 NFL Season.
2. Derrick Henry, RB, TEN
Derrick Henry had his 2021 season cut short in week 8 of the regular season with a Jones fracture. However, before his injury he was leading the NFL in rushing yards, carries, and rushing touchdowns. He was even on pace to break the NFL rushing record. He did end up coming back for the Titans during the Divisional Round against the Cincinnati Bengals.
In his last full season in 2020, Henry scored 333.1 fantasy points. This was good for third amongst running backs after Alvin Kamara (377.8) and Dalvin Cook (337.8).
1. Jonathan Taylor, RB, IND
Jonathan Taylor is coming off another great year for the Colts which led to him rushing for1,811 yards and 18 TDs. Overall, Taylor had accumulated 2,171 total yards and 20 total TDs. During weeks 4-11, Taylor went on an absolute tear. In each of those games, he over 100 scrimmage yards and at least 1 touchdown. In weeks 1-3, Taylor did not get more than 100 yards in any of those games. Taylor ended the season as the league rushing yards and rushing touchdowns leader. He was also selected to the Pro Bowl last season, receiving the most votes from the fan vote.
From a fantasy football standpoint, Taylor scored a total of 373.1 fantasy points over the course of the 2021 NFL Season. This was good for first among running backs and seventh throughout the entire NFL. Expect Jonathan Taylor to repeat the success of his 2021 season and be highly productive for his fantasy owners throughout the 2022 NFL Season.
