Discussing Women's Hoops: A Rich Legacy



Basketball is a worldwide game. It transcends boundaries from gender, to race, to country to country, and continent to continent.


Women’s Basketball has come a long way since it’s humble beginnings in 1891.


The talent throughout the history of women's basketball is far from being a shortage of any kind. From Cheryl Miller, to Lisa Leslie, to Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi, to A'ja Wilson, and many others. Women's basketball has a rich history. It's not just the players that make Women's Basketball great. It's the coaches as well.


Pat Summit, who has won 8 national titles as head coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team, is regarded as one of the greatest basketball coaches of all time. Her 'Definite Dozen' rules for success in her coaching philosophy helped her players grow both athletically and as people. These rules led to Summit winning 1,098 games and 8 national championships.


Geno Auriemma, head coach of the UConn Huskies Women's Basketball team, has had great success as head coach, coaching UConn to 11 NCAA Championship wins. That total is the most championship wins between men's and women's coaches. Throughout his career, Auriemma has coached some of the greatest female basketball players of all time. Players such as Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart, and Tina Charles just to name a few have all gone through Auriemma's system and achieved green success both at the college and the WNBA level.


The 2021 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament did not miss at all. The Uconn-Baylor Elite 8 game was the highest rated game of the week, beating out the men's Elite 8 games that happened on the same night. The ending of that game (ended in what many thought was a controversial non foul call) led to many of sports biggest stars such as LeBron James, Skylar Diggins-Smith, and Natasha Cloud giving reactions to the ending on Twitter. The National Championship game between Arizona and Stanford came down to the wire with Stanford mustering out the victory and winning the championship.


The 2021 NCAA Women’s College Basketball Championship Game between Arizona and Stanford attracted 4 million viewers. This is the most watched women’s title game since 2014.


Paige Bueckers of Uconn, who is arguably the best college basketball player in the nation, has become the first freshman in women's college basketball history to win AP Women's Player of the Year. Paige Bueckers


The women's game is surging in popularity. As the women’s college game gains more viewers and the WNBA celebrates it’s 25 anniversary, the media coverage that Women’s Basketball is receiving now is more than it ever has been before.


The legacy of Women’s Basketball is a rich one.
